PROPOSED FOR 2017...

ANNOUNCING: THE BEST IN THE WEST IS NOT JUST A HALTER FUTURITY ANYMORE !!!!!!

This announcement is going out to you, our loyal exhibitors from the Best In The West Breeders Futurity (BITW).  When we began the BITW program, it was our hope that we could be successful and build a long term program for many.  Our plan has been to continue monitoring the needs of our industry, while and at the same time continue to build a program that benefits a broader range of exhibitors as well as halter horses that can be competitive as performance horses.   Given the continued success of the BITW program, and knowing that many of our horses can and will be successful outside of halter, we are happy to introduce to you a new program that will benefit the continued progress of both the Best In The West  Breeders Futurity and the horses we breed and raise.

INTRODUCING OUR NEW “ALL AROUND HALTER-PERFORMANCE” FUTURITY PROGRAM!!!!
On our PROGRAMS page you will find the details of the new "All Around Halter-Performance" Futurity Program.  It includes information about the "Objective" of the program, the reason and philosophy behind it, as well as eligibility and entry into the program.  Questions about this program should be directed to those individuals listed below.  They can help answer questions and provide you with any further details you may wish to request.
As always, we want to thank you for your participation in the Best In The West Breeders Program, and we hope you will join us in our excitement as we progress further with a program that gives our industry a long term program for participation.

BEST IN THE WEST - ALL AROUND FUTURITY
Sponsored By The Best In The West Breeders Program

Objective:  To provide an All Breed all-around form of competition that recognizes horses that possess ideal form to function conformation, structural correctness, eye appeal, athletic movement, and display a willing disposition while performing prescribed tasks.

The existing Best In The West Breeder’s Futurity Program is primarily a halter horse program but as breeders we all raise horses each year that are not going to excel when competing against horses with more defined halter qualities.  As a complete breeder’s program we want to provide these horses a venue to compete, to find a niche that suits their athletic abilities and then after the competition they can then go on with successful show careers or make excellent ranch horses.  Our goal has always been to provide our stallion owners “significant reasons” to participate in the Best In The West Breeders Program each year, to be a “user friendly” futurity program always striving to incorporate new ideas that will invigorate the horse industry.  Offspring sired by stallions currently enrolled in the BITW are eligible to compete in this all-around competition but we will also offer a separate section for stallions who want their offspring eligible for just the performance portion of the futurities.  This first year ONLY 15 stallions will be accepted into this elite section, in following years as we add more performance classes additional performance stallion slots may be added.   Performance “only” stallion nominations will be offered at a reduced fee of $500.00.    Performance stallion nomination monies will be added to the lunge line and all-around purses to increase payouts.  A percentage of the halter stallion nominations, whose get participate in the all-around competition, will also be added to the purse.  Our goal for this new program is to pay deep with first place paying at least $5000.00 in cash and prizes!  This program will give breeders (stallion owners and mare owners) an opportunity to prove that horses they raise can compete in performance just as well as they compete in halter classes.  With the increasing popularity of ranch riding competition I feel this will go hand in hand with promoting offspring of BITW stallions.

1) Eligibility:   Limited to 25 APHA, ApHC  or AQHA yearlings (plus 5 alternates) that consign into a fall sale held during our Best In The West event each fall.  Slots can be purchased prior to naming the horse that will eventually be consigned, horses must be named by September 1st. To be fair to “performance only” stallions those owners will have first right to the first 15 yearling slots, any remaining slots filled by offspring of stallions from the halter pool. These 25 horses will compete:
a.As yearlings in the lunge line competition prior to the sale.  Cash paybacks and prizes will be awarded to top finishers.
b.Yearlings that go through the sale are eligible to come back as two year olds to compete in the all-around competition.  There will not be any sales commissions charged for yearlings.
2)35% of the amount of the last bid each horse brings in the yearling sale will be held back and used as purse money for the two year old competition.  Horses can be “no sold” and still remain eligible, however the owner must pay 35% of the last bid into the purse.   The sale will be held immediately following the lunge line competition.  Bids start at $1000 for each horse.
3)A flat rate consignment fee of $500 gets horses into the sale and a free entry into the lunge line competition, this $500 consignment fee will then be deducted from the 35% amount of the final sales price.  All horses will be subject to the minimum $500 consignment fee.
(Examples: If a horse’s final bid is $1430.00 or less no additional monies are owed to keep the horse eligible for two year old competition.  However, if a horse sells for $2000.00, 35% of that amount which is $700.00, is retained for the purse less the $500 consignment fee.
100% of money collected from horse sale is added to the purse so it’s attractive for buyers and consignors to want to come back as two year olds and compete for monies they all contributed to in the yearling sale.  With 35% of the final sales commission added back to the purse it also discourages someone from consigning a “ringer” so we keep the competition equal.

ENTRY FEES:
Nomination Fees For Two Yr Olds To Remain Eligible After Going Through The Sale,  Three Options:
a.Option #1:  By June 1 - $200.00, or
b.Option #2:  By July 1 -   $300.00, or
c.Option #3: By August 1 - $400.00 (No further nominations accepted after this date)
October 1:  Final Entry Fee of $250.00
Once the horse goes through the sale there are No Refunds, No Substitutions for any reason. 10% of all nomination and entry fees retained for the cost of promotion and awards.
Horses can change ownership at any time prior to the futurity but new owners are subject to a $100 change of ownership fee.

Two year olds will compete in three phases of competition. Each horse will earn point credits in each of the three phases and points then totaled for final placings of the All Around Competition.
a. Phase one:   Horses are judged in a pleasure class.  Horses can be shown in either a snaffle bit or hackamore.  No equipment restrictions on amount of silver.  Artificial tails are permissible and exhibitors have the option to band manes.
b.Phase two: Horses are judged on conformation.  Judging criteria based on the best combination of balance, structural correctness, movement, eye appeal and adequate muscling.  The judging of the halter class will take place IMMEDIATELY following the placings of the pleasure class, each horse will be allowed two helpers to enter the arena to assist with the removal of tack and have limited time to prepare horse for halter competition.
c.Phase three:  This phase will simulate the versatility, attitude and movement of a horse outside the confines of an arena and that of a ranch working horse.  Horses will be judged on AQHA Ranch Horse Pattern One, suitable for two year olds.  No braided or banded manes or tail extensions.  Horse’s facial hair and fetlocks can be trimmed, no hoof polish.  Silver on saddle and bridle is discouraged. Phase three will be time consuming so this phase will be judged the night or day prior to the finals.
d.All horses coming back for the two year old competition will be subject to inspection to insure all horses match the registration papers that were submitted as yearlings.

Sale:  To give owners additional incentive to participate in this elite program all horses that finish the two year old competition will be eligible to be consigned to the sale again if owner chooses.

Payouts:
Pay top 10 places in the main all around event.  Recognize the champion within each phase (Champion Pleasure Horse-Champion Halter Horse-Champion Ranch Horse) and pay at least three places within each phase.

Awards:  Trophy saddle to Champion All Around Performance Horse.  Every exhibitor that competes in the two year old event gets “something” of value.  (Saddles-saddlepads-spurs-monogrammed items, etc.)  Corporate sponsors will be solicited to sponsor this event.

Thank you for your enthusiasm in wanting to participate in this unique competition, entry forms will be available soon and posted on our web site.   Sale slots will open June 1, 2016.  If you have additional questions about all aspects of the Best In The West Breeder’s Program or wish to nominate your stallion into the performance horse section contact:
